Seven Productive Ways Teachers Can Do This Summer

With April 12 as the official last day of school for SY 2016-2017, DepEd teachers often have more free time compared to any profession. With June 5, 2017 as the unofficial first day of class for SY 2017-2018, teachers can spend their time in productive ways this summer. Here are some of them:

Choose your travel destination. Teachers are travelers. There are many travel destinations that you can choose from this summer. You can opt to go to outside of the country or just travel within the Philippines. Teachers cannot travel outside the Philippines during the school year. Thus, it would be great to spend your summer traveling abroad.

Get a summer job. It is a great opportunity for teachers to make ends meet by getting a summer job. There are tutorial centers all over the Philippines that offer summer classes. With your experience and credentials, you can apply as a summer teacher for subjects that you already teach during the school year. If you are a techie, you can apply for online jobs such as virtual assistant, content writer, or a data entry specialist.

Learn something new. Just because it is summer time does not mean that you should have an idle mind. You can find a non-academic skill that you can learn during summer. You can learn how to cook, learn a new language, or learn computer programming (depends on how academic this is for you). There are online courses offered by TESDA that are for free. You can even obtain short-term grants for learning a new language that is offered by TESDA.

Plan a special family bonding time. It is important to maintain healthy relationships with people. This is more so when it comes to family. You can plan with your spouse for simple family trips. You can even have staycations where you just stay right at home, yet create activities inside your lovely abode. Make sure that you show appreciation to your partner for the time that you spend for those parent-teacher conferences.

Attend a financial literacy seminar. As much as the 3Rs is important to learners, teachers must also be financially literate. There are many free seminars that are being offered in various parts of the Philippines. You can join a stock market seminar, insurance, network marketing, freelancing, and others. You might find attending these seminars your pathway towards financial freedom.

Write an action research. You might say this portion is like it is going overboard. However, with the recent IPCRF of DepEd teachers, even Teachers I to 3 have a component that includes writing action researches. You can try applying for the BERF program of DepEd. By the way, the second call-up of research proposals is this coming July 2017. You can check DepEd’s site for more details.

Find the love of your life. Haha! It is said that there are more single individuals in the teaching profession compared to other fields of endeavor (Probably because of the large number of teachers compared to other jobs). Who knows? You might not be part of those who are meant for single blessedness. You might find the love of your life this summer. Keep those eyes and your heart open. Haha! Kidding aside, just enjoy your life whether you are married, single, complicated, or undetermined.

With the sweltering heat of the sun this summer, hope you can have at least one of the ways mentioned in this article.

See you on the next blog, teacher!
